To give some sense of the pace of public works
construction in China, the city of Guangzhou is planning to open
83 miles of new subway lines by the end of next year.
Meanwhile, New York ? a city of about the same size ? has
been playing around with the 1.7-mile Second Avenue line for
decades now. China also builds subways rather cheaply ? $100
million per mile versus $ 2.4 billion per mile in the Big Apple.
Not surprisingly, projects there are more aggressive in all
respects: there are 60 tunnel boring machines operating in
Guangzhou, while only one is slated for the Second Avenue
project; workers put in five 12-hour shifts a week (and if they
don't like it, they can go pound glacial till); and seizing property
is a breeze.

(Clash of Subways and Car Culture in Chinese Cities by Keith
Bradsher) [VERB] a smart look at the forces at play as China
goes on a transit infrastructure spending spree while it
simultaneously becomes evermore sprawling and car-centric.

billions in systems that will put less stress on the environment
and on cities. But they warn that other Chinese policies, like
allowing real estate developers to build sprawling new suburbs,

of the works in Guangzhou, defended Guangzhou's combination
of cars and subways, saying that the city built a subway line to a new Toyota assembly plant to help employees and suppliers
reach it.
Subways have been most competitive in cities like New
York that have high prices for parking, and tolls for bridges and
tunnels, discouraging car use. Few Chinese cities have been
willing to follow suit, other than Shanghai, which charges a fee of
several thousand dollars for each license plate.
The cost and physical limitations of subways have
discouraged most cities from building new ones. For instance,
only Tokyo has a subway system that carries more people than
its buses. The buses are cheaper and able to serve far more
streets but move more slowly, pollute more and contribute to
traffic congestion.
China has reason to worry. It surpassed the United
States in total vehicle sales for the first time in January, although
the United States remained slightly ahead in car sales. But in
February, China overtook the United States in both, in part
because the global downturn has hurt auto sales much more in
the United States than in China.
There are many countervaling forces ..X.. China has
passed its own stimulus package and the government is eager
to put people to work, create economic activity, and build
modern infrastructure. The Guangzhou project is part of major
national transit buildout. But the nation's cities are also sprawling
beasts, and in that sense, more suited to cars than trains. Not

Pensioners face £1,000 fine if they don't get TV licence this week

Summertime is the time of year for the
sandwich. But just how did this famous
food get started? Its history only traces
back a few hundred years!
It was in 1762, and strangely enough, it
involved gambling. The Earl of Sandwich,
John Montagu, was playing cards with his

stop playing. So he asked for his normal
meat and cheese to be brought stuck in bread so that he could eat with one hand
while playing with the other.
His companions thought this was a brilliant
idea, being solid gamblers themselves, and

The sandwich hit the US in 1827, when
Elizabeth Leslie published her cookbook
that included a ham sandwich. lt was
immediately popular with the population of
the states, giving a practical, portable meal
for workers and schoolchildren.
By the 1900s, bakeries started selling presliced bread, so that sandwiches were easy
to create. Until that time, consumers would
buy solid loaves - or bake their own bread
at home. Bread portions were often just
torn off the loaf in random shapes. Now,
with perfectly sliced pieces of bread, the
sandwich had come into its glory.

Climate change: Oceans running out of oxygen as temperatures rise
“Climate change and nutrient pollution are driving the oxygen from our oceans, and
threatening many species of fish.
While nutrient run-off has been known for decades, researchers say that climate change is
making the lack of oxygen worse. Around 700 ocean sites are now suffering from low oxygen,
compared with 45 in the 1960s.
Researchers say the depletion is threatening species including tuna, marlin and sharks.
The scientists estimate that between 1960 and 2010, the amount of the gas dissolved in the
oceans declined by 2%. That may not seem like much as it is a global average, but in some tropical
locations the loss can range up to 40%.
If countries continue with a business-as-usual approach to emissions, the world's oceans are
expected to lose 3-4% of their oxygen by the year 2100.
This is likely to be worse in the tropical regions of the world. Much of the loss is expected in
the top 1,000m of the water column, which is richest in biodiversity.
"Ocean oxygen depletion is menacing marine ecosystems already under stress from ocean
warming and acidification," said Dan Laffoley, also from IUCN and the report's co-editor. "To stop
the worrying expansion of oxygen-poor areas, we need to decisively curb greenhouse gas emissions
as well as nutrient pollution from agriculture and other sources."”

Barbuda, the first island to feel the force of Hurricane Irma

Emmanuel Macron, earlier said he expected Irma-related
damage to St Martin and another French overseas
collectivity, Saint Barthélemy (St Barts), would be
“considerable”. France’s overseas minister, Annick
Girardin, was travelling to the Caribbean with emergency
teams and supplies. The most recent island to be hit was
Puerto Rico, where lashing winds and rains have left most
of the population without power and tens of thousands
without water. Images from the island showed flash
flooding, and hospitals were forced to rely on generators.
Irma is the worst hurricane to hit the island since 1928,
when Hurricane San Felipe killed more than 2,700 people
across Puerto Rico, Guadeloupe and Florida .More than
two thirds of homes in Puerto Rico are without electricity,
and 17% are without water, officials have said.. Florida’s
governor, Rick Scott, warned that the arrival of Irma’s lifethreatening wind field and storm surge was imminent, and
urged residents in coastal areas to leave immediately.
About 250,000 people were ordered to evacuate, making
it of the largest evacuations in US history as the National
Hurricane Center (NHC) placed south Florida, including
the southernmost counties of Monroe, Miami-Dade and
Broward, under a hurricane watch. Preparations were
escalating at a furious pace as the storm’s forecast path
narrowed in on the south-eastern portion of the state,
home to 7 million residents. Philip Levine, the mayor of
Miami Beach, ordered a mandatory evacuation of the
barrier island beginning at daybreak on Thursday. “This is
a nuclear hurricane,” he said. “I’ll do anything in my power
to convince them to leave. Get off Miami Beach.”Scott
warned that that effects of the storm could begin to be felt
later on Friday, with the NHC predicting Irma’s full wrath
would strike the south-east coast near Miami sometime
late Saturday or early Sunday morning then move
north.“Look at the size of the storm,” Scott said. “It’s huge,
it’s wider than our entire state right now. If you are under
an evacuation order do not wait. Leave and get out. We
can rebuild your home but you can’t get your life back.”
