Are You Pooping All Wrong?

5 tips to keep your bowels healthy

When it comes to our bowels — and their movements — we may not give them much thought. Of course, when things are not going well, we notice.

However, bowel movements don’t just tell us about the health of our digestive system. This may sound strange, but signs of everything from diseases to stress may show up in your bathroom habits. The key is knowing what to look for — and what the signs may mean.

Here are five tips to encourage healthy bowels:

    1. Don’t ignore rectal bleeding

The first thing most people worry about when they have minor rectal bleeding is that they have a cancer. Of course, colon cancer is also a concern. But it’s the cause of rectal bleeding only 1 to 2 percent of the time.

Two problems are usually responsible for blood on the paper, on the stool or in the toilet: hemorrhoids and anal fissures. The good news is that both problems are usually easy to fix.

    2. Be careful not to be overzealous when you wipe

A lot of people assume they have hemorrhoids. May their bottoms itch and they feel extra skin down there as they wipe. Must be hemorrhoids, right?

So they treat themselves with medicated wipes or cream. And yet the “hemorrhoids” don’t go away — they itch even more.

Often, the problem is, ironically, being too clean. What happens is a circular process. Filled with good intentions, you try to keep yourself scrupulously clean by using flushable wipes. But the unexpected result is that this leads to itching and the feeling that you have hemorrhoids.

    3. Don’t treat the bathroom like a library

Think of your time in the bathroom as a necessity, not an extended escape. If your toilet has stacks of magazines or books on the water tank, consider moving them to another room.

Why? The more time you spend on the toilet, the more likely you will strain for bowel movements. Also, the seated position puts extra stress on your anal blood vessels. Both of these factors boost your risk of hemorrhoids.

    4. Get enough fiber in your diet

The goal is to eat 25 to 35 grams of fiber each day. The lack of fiber in the American diet is perhaps the major problem that leads to issues with constipation.

One of the challenges is that not all natural sources are equal in the amounts of fiber they contain, so you don’t always get a consistent amount of fiber intake every day, depending on what you eat. One day a bowl of oatmeal may do it. Another day a serving of broccoli may not.

Of course, each person’s needs are different, too, so you have to find what works best for your body.

    5. Avoid dehydration if you have diarrhea

The biggest danger with a short bout of diarrhea is dehydration, or the loss of water and nutrients from the body’s tissues. You could become dehydrated if you have diarrhea more than three times a day and are not drinking enough fluids. Dehydration can cause serious complications if it is not treated. The best way to guard against dehydration is to drink liquids that contain both salt and sugar.

Read the text to answer question.

"I’m not a naturally wrathful person. I don’t like to (and usually don’t) lose my temper. The exception is when drivers ignore pedestrian right of way. I will, whether I’m a few steps or a few miles into my walk, admonish them — loudly and none too gently. (They, of course, cannot hear me inside their cars.)

It’s hard to shake the impression that New York City’s drivers have become more aggressive. They run reds, viciously honk and yell at pedestrians who clearly have the right of way and generally endanger the lives of those on foot.

From 2009 to 2022, an average of 136 pedestrians were killed each year by traffic in the city. The numbers have gone down slightly — to 99 in 2023 — but cyclist deaths have climbed, though they remain a small fraction of pedestrian deaths. (The city’s decision to give pedestrians a head start at many intersections, where walk signals turn white before streetlights go green, may be helping.)

In the United States generally, walking has become far more dangerous. The number of pedestrian fatalities nationally has climbed more than 80 percent in the past 15 years, largely because of increasingly hazardous automotive design. Some police departments effectively no longer punish drivers for any traffic infractions. San Francisco’s police officers “have almost entirely abandoned enforcement of traffic laws,” The Times’s Heather Knight reported.

All of this calls not just for policy changes such as automobile regulation, improved policing and better urban planning but also for a more assertive pedestrian culture. Aggressive drivers have exacerbated this problem; aggressive pedestrians can help solve it."

Text: The importance of the PowerPoint as a classroom resource
(Text adapted from Teachers: 5 Tips for Creating Great PowerPoint Presentations, retrieved

PowerPoint is a resource developed by Microsoft and released initially in 1990. It is mainly used in professional meeting presentations all over the world.
One of these professions is in educational area: teacher.
PowerPoint presentation is spread among teachers because it is different from lecturing or teaching with a textbook; it is also a way of sharing content with students.
To produce a PowerPoint correctly, teachers need to know how to put the slides together, it can be an effective way of reinforcing content to students so that they are better able to retain it. Otherwise, teachers can print and distribute the PowerPoint presentation or post it online, so students can go back and access it as reference material. However, if it is not put together correctly, a PowerPoint presentation can disengage and make students bored.
To develop PowerPoint presentation is simple and it can also provide a fun time noticed by its characteristics: basic, simple, and not distracting, it can be focused on keywords; for instance, always be sure to include a summary slide of what the presentation is intending to accomplish as well as a table of contents on the different topics that will be covered in the program. The summary slide serves as the main topic and what students should learn after viewing the presentation. Then, at the end of the PowerPoint presentation, teachers should include another summary slide, going over everything that was just covered and, again, highlighting the main point.

Bottom line
PowerPoint presentations need to have a purpose and the teacher must make sure that the purpose is understood.

Add pictures
Teachers can reinforce the content with pictures, charts, symbols, and other images. In fact, sometimes it’s better to have more pictures than text in a PowerPoint presentation, because images work to reinforce a content main point.
Teachers typically will just share it with their classes, so they can pull images straight from the Internet. However, for teachers who are making more public and widespread presentations, copyright law needs to be considered (Brazil Information Access Law nº 12.527; Art. 31; paragraph 3; item II).

Add video
Pictures can help to reinforce a main point or support content, as well as videos. Some research affirm that students enjoy watching videos and retain information from them well, especially if the video is engaging, interesting and informative. Teachers can embed videos right from YouTube or from their desktops to complement a PowerPoint presentation.

Practice
Nothing turns off a class like a poorly put together PowerPoint presentation, so teachers should always be sure to do a quick rehearsal before they present it to the class. While testing it, make sure all the images load up on the slides, videos load up properly and audio works, too. Also, it’s important for teachers to make sure that there’s a way to connect their computer, or upload anything that’s storing the PowerPoint presentation, to a larger TV monitor or projector screen so the whole class does not have to huddle around a computer screen to view it. Teachers should also make sure that any text can be read and understood. Be sure that the color scheme is good.

Make it fun
A PowerPoint presentation can be an innovative way of teaching. It’s a more interesting and engaging way for students to learn than the typical lecture. Teachers should embrace this teaching resource and have fun with it. Throw in some jokes, possibly some funny pictures and be sure to get creative with presentations.

As we previously noted, the more students enjoy a lecture, presentation, or activity, the more likely they are to retain information.
Read the sentences and tick the alternative that contains the imperative mood.

I. Be sure that the color scheme is good.
II. Teachers should also make sure that any text can be read and understood.
III. It’s a more interesting and engaging way for students to learn than the typical lecture.

Consider the following text:

How to Make a Cup of Green Tea

To prepare a cup of green tea, follow these steps. First, boil water to about 80°C (176°F); avoid using boiling water as it can make the tea taste bitter. Place a green tea bag or one teaspoon of loose green tea leaves into a cup. Pour the hot water over the tea and let it steep for 2 to 3 minutes. Do not steep for too long, as this can affect the flavor. After steeping, remove the tea bag or strain the leaves. Finally, enjoy your tea plain or add a touch of honey if you prefer a bit of sweetness.

Select the alternative that correctly identifies the linguistic features present in the text.
