Electrophysiology is the branch of neuroscience that explores the electrical activity of living neurons and investigates the molecular and cellular processes that govern their signaling. Neurons communicate using electrical and chemical signals. Electrophysiology techniques listen in on these signals by measuring electrical activity, allowing scientists to decode intercellular and intracellular messages. Electrophysiology is a major tool in understanding how information is processed in the brain. Each electrophysiology lab setup is different, reflecting the questions being addressed, the requirements of the experiment, and the personal preferences of the investigators. There is, however, a standard set of equipment necessary and desirable to record electrical signals from neurons. Electrophysiology testing is used primarily in patients who have an arrhythmia diagnosed. Occasionally, if a patient presents with palpitations that appear to be consistent with or highly suspicious of a supraventricular tachycardia, then an electrophysiology test may be useful without further diagnostic evaluation.
